The United States Supreme Court hears oral arguments today on whether life without parole for juveniles who are convicted of a crime other than murder is an unconstitutional violation of the Eighth Amendments prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.  The most interesting opponent of this Florida law is probably Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyo) who might have suffered a similar fate when he engaged in criminal activity as a juvenile.  The question is whether we want to lock kids up in their early teens forever or consider on a case by case basis whether they have been rehabilitated and punished enough at some future point.
